Friends,

Reg: Shri R.Narayanan, former Chairman of LIC is no more

When news came just now, of the passing away of Sri R Narayanan, our former Chairman, I felt that tinge of sadness that characterizes the loss of near ones. Though I had not worked with him at lower levels in Divisions or Zones, where he was in- charge, I came to know him somewhat at closer levels when he was the Chairman and I had occasions to meet him as Negotiating Committee member of the Federation of Class  I Officers, alongside Sri G N Sridharan, Sri O P Vashisht, Sri Dilip Chakraborty, in the year 1986. The same day, after our somewhat extended period of Negotiations under the leadership of our then President Sri Yeshwant Sinha, on my return travel from Mumbai to Kolkata on way to Jamshedpur, Sri R Narayanan was also on the same flight, and once again I had an occasion to have a closer chat where he made enquiries about my personal/family matters.

He was a man of very sharp memory of people all over the LIC, and he would off-hand reel off phone numbers of Agents and other important people around, from memory. It was quite sad that in the last few years of his life he was struck down to a phase of existence where , due to oral surgery, his talk ,which was one of his strengths, had gone muffled and almost undecipherable. He was one of those old doyens of leaders of the LIC, who should take a lot of credit for engineering the Organisation on very healthy lines, where it not only became a fast growing life insurer, but also became the central agency for the learning and growth of life insurance as a specialised area of study. A lot many like me who served in those times will remember this apparently simple person with a clear streak of greatness.

My heartfelt condolences to the family.  May his soul rest in peace

Message from Shri G.N.Sridharan our former General Secretary

Shri R Narayanan was indeed a legend in LIC and I was naturally  shaken rudely when I learnt about his passing away on the night of Tuesday the 1st April 2021.

A person with an extremely sharp intellect and known for his quick repartees ,shri Narayanan was equally affable and un- assuming. My relationship with him extended over a very long period from his days as SDM in the then Madras DO till he rose to the position of chairman as it coincided with my tenure as Gen.secy  of the Federation of LIC class 1 officers' Associations. We used to have heated exchanges across the negotiating table but once we were out of the room he would revert to his natural and friendly manners.

After settling down at Chennai on retirement he instantly enrolled himself as a member of our Association at my request. He had successfully battled against oral cancer but was known to be fairly in normal heath for over a decade after recovery. His advanced age was perhaps against him.

Shri Narayanan  leaves behind his wife,  a son and a daughter to mourn his loss. It is reported that while his daughter and son-in-law were at his bedside when he breathed his last.  His son who is in US is expected to arrive today.

We  extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and pray for his soul to rest in peace.' OM SHANTI.

- GN Sridharan

Appeal by Sridharan G.N 6:02 PM (13 minutes ago) FAITH AND PRAYER  deserve to be considered as one of the weapons to fight the virus menace. It is  not without purpose that even the Westerners believe in the old dictum - 'many things are wrought by prayers'. Gandhiji said that the tenets of Hindu religion and faith has universal application .Our ancient texts do prescribe prayers as a panacea for all human ailments. For instance in Mahabharata - vide Dwadasa nama pancharam an appendix to Vishnu Sahasranamam - a sloka in the words of Bishma pitamah runs as follows: "Achyutha,Anantha,Govinda namocharana beshajath nasyanti sakala rohath ,Satyam satyam vadhamyaham" That is, he swears that uttering the various names of the Lord will cure a person  of  ALL his diseases. In another sloka it is said that even water from holy Ganga can be good enough a medicine (oushadam) if only we believe the Lord (sriman Narayana) as the doctor.(vaidy
